Cooking

I have enjoyed cooking and baking since my youth.  Although not a gourmet cook, I do spend much time exploring new avenues for cooking.  When not cooking for my family, a favorite pastime is looking through cookbooks, recipe websites, and cooking magazines. I also strive to impart food safety knowledge to my children and incorporate it into our food preparations and storage.

Prerequisites for this Activity

Cooking

Introduction

Most people appreciate good food and the comfort of a delicious home-cooked meal. Many Scouts know the fun of enjoying a tasty cookout after a rigorous day in the outdoors. The Cooking merit badge will introduce you to principles of cooking that can be used both at home and in the outdoors. You will learn about food safety, nutritional guidelines, meal planning, and methods of food preparation.

Pre-Requisites –        …“Be Prepared”

Please read the latest "2014" version of the Cooking merit badge book prior to the class. These books can be borrowed from your Troop Librarian, or ordered from The Atlanta Area Scout Shop, phone (770) 989-9912, or visit the Scout Shop at 1800 Circle 75 Parkway, Se, Atlanta, GA 30339.   *NEW* - or buy and download an electronic copy of the pamphlet to your smartphone, tablet or laptop here.

Please print out a copy of the Cooking Worksheet and bring a copy with you to the class. By using this Requirements Resources link (use only with your parent's permission) you will find additional information that will help you with your prerequisite tasks.

For this Merit Badge Class you will be required to work on the following requirement before coming to the class.

Requirement #5, 6 & 7...  Using the Cooking worksheet you printed out, plan and write down the menus for Requirements #5, #6 and #7. Ensure that you follow the requirements outlined for the different types of menus. Please email me these menus at least a week before class if you want them approved and signed off on-the-day of class.  Bring your cost and quantity analysis for these requirements to class.

Requirement #8...  Find out about three career opportunities in cooking. Select one and find out the education, training, and experience required for this profession. Discuss this with your counselor, and explain why this profession might interest you. Please enter your notes into the Worksheet that you printed out and be prepared to discuss these careers in class with your Counselor.
