 PREREQUISITES FOR LIFESAVING:  
1. Read Merit Badge pamphlet prior to class.
2. Review Safe Swim Defense.
3. Req. 1a  should be completed prior to course, Troop leadership  should provide statement of candidates being currently classified as Swimmer.
4. Canidates should understand that the first in water activity will be Req. 1b  swim continuously for 400 yards.
5. Bring clothes for Req. 7e. Info in pamphlet is on pg 51. Clothes should be shoes, socks, long pants( jeans work best) with belt, long sleeve button up shirt, jacket' sweater, or sweat shirt. These clothes will not get wet !!!!
6. Req. 13 and 15 will NOT be part of this course.



PREREQUISITES FOR SWIMMING:



1. Read Merit Badge pamphlet prior to class.
2. Review Safe Swim Defense
3. Req. 1, 2, and 3 should be completed prior to course. Troop leadership should provide statement of candidates being currently classified as Swimmer.
4. Req. 4, bring clothes for in water survival skills demonstration. Clothes should  be: shoes, socks, long pants with belt, long sleeve button up shirt. Pants and shirt can not be knit fabric. Jeans work well for pants but can not have holes in fabric. Tightly woven cotton shirts work well. The cloth needs to hold air when wet to give support during inflation demonstration. ALL THESE CLOTHES INCLUDING SHOES WILL GET WET.
5. Req. 10 will NOT be part of this course.

PREREQUISITES FOR BSA SWIMMING AND WATER RESCUE

BSA Swimming & Water Rescue provides BSA leaders with information and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to swimming emergencies during unit swimming activities. It expands on the instruction provided by Safe Swim Defense training, to better prepare leaders for supervising unit swimming events. This training also allows leaders to conduct swim checks for their units. BSA recommends that at least one person with this training is present to assist with supervision whenever a unit swims at a location that does not provide lifeguards. To participate in this course you must be at least 16 years old, a BSA Swimmer, and able to retrieve a 10lb weight from 8ft of water. In preparation for this course please review the Safe Swim Defense Training available onhttp://olc.scouting.org

Class Size: 8

Time: All Day

Prerequisites:

1. Must be 15 years old or older prior to training.
2. Must have current physical examination.
3. Must have of proof of completion of the BSA Swimmers Test within the last 6 months.

Course Work:

1. Recover 10 pound weight from 8 feet of water.
2. Adminster the BSA Beginner and Swimmer classification tests.
3. Demonstrate various reaching and throwing rescue techniques.
4. Demonstrate entries into deep water.
5. Demonstrate various in water rescue techniques.
6. Demonstrate various defensive actions.
7. Demonstrate in-line stabilization for a suspected spinal injury.
8. Correctly answer 80 % of the questions on the Swimming and Water Rescue written exam covering Safe Swim Defense, emergency action plans, surveillance, victim recognition, and water rescue.




  Youth Protection not completed within the past two years.
