Biography

Several Upper Chattahoochee Trout Unlimited chapter members and I are looking forward to the upcoming Merit Badge University.

This class is an introduction to fly fishing.  Scouts will complete only certain of the MB requirements.  Furthermore, this class is a prerequisite for each Scout planning to complete the MB Saturday, October31st, at the Atlanta Fly Fishing School (AFFS).  At that time, Scouts will complete the remaining MB requirements including, hopefully, catching two species of fish.

A $15 fee per Scout is necessary to defray the cost of equipment and supplies at the AFFS. We will register you for the AFFS outing when you attend the Kennesaw Merit Badge University MB class and pay the fee.

Please sign up for this MB class only if you plan to complete the requirements at the AFFS on October 31st.

To ensure you make as much progress as possible, please get a merit badge pamphlet and “be prepared” to complete on the following requirements:

      A.  For requirements 2, 4, 5, and 8, read the relevant sections in merit badge pamphlet and be prepared to discuss, explain and learn these particular skills.  We will have copies of the GA fishing regulations available for your review.

      B.  Requirement 3, read the relevant section in the merit badge pamphlet.  We will have ropes and instructor to teach you the knots of this requirement.

      C.  Requirement 5, read the relevant sections in the merit badge pamphlet.  We will have the necessary fishing equipment to teach you these two casting techniques.

We expect your troop to test and sign off on requirements 1, 7 and 9.  If time permits, we will review review the removal of a fishhook lodged in your arm and the five fly-fishing safety practices.

We have scheduled a fishing expedition at the AFFS November 1, 2008 to complete requirements 6 and 10.  Details will be sent to those Scouts completing this course at the MBU.

We’re looking forward to a very productive day.
