Biography PREREQUISITES : 1. Must be a First Class Scout or above or at least 13 years of age (I need mature scouts only)

2. Buy and read the 2006 Revision of the Environmental Science Merit Badge Book. Do not use any older version of this book.

3. Dress accordingly (bring a jacket or rain gear) as we will be spending some time out-of-doors doing fieldwork (late October weather).

4. Scouts are advised to do the following work at home before the course - the hope is the more he completes before the class the better.

Scouts should do the following ahead of time. Credit will be awarded for (taken from the Merit badge book or this link http://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php?title=Environmental_Science):

1. Make a timeline of the history of Environmental Science (see instructions in the book)
3 (b) (2) - record trips and mileage to calculate miles per gallon (must do this for 7 days).
3 (d) (3) - photograph or draw an area hurt by erosion (bring in photo to discuss)
3 (e) choice of 1, 2 or 3 - report on an endangered species (100 word report minimum)
3 (f) choice of 1 or 2 - ways at home to reduce pollution or conserve resources (must do this for 7 days)
6 Bring in 3 job ads (paper or internet) on careers in Environmental Science.

The rest of the requirements will be met in class. The more the Scout completes (see above) before the course the less incompletes he will have coming out of the course.

Minimum Age/Rank: First Class Scout, 13

Maximum in Class: 15 (target class size +/- one or two)

Counselor's biography:
Ken Joerger is a Global Manager of Environmrnt, Health and Safety for International Paper Company headquartered in Memphis, TN. Ken has over 25 years in the practice of enviriponment science, safety and industrial hygiene in manufacturing, the past 17 years in pulp and paper. Ken holds a BS in Chemistry/Biology from the University at Albany (NY) and an MS in Environmental Sciences from Harvard University. Ken has taught the Environmental Science Merit badge at the 2006 Chickasaw Council Merit Badge College at Saint Georges School , at the 2006 Boxwell Scout Reservation (Nashville) and at the 2008 Troop 332 Merit Badge College at Cordova Middle School.
