First Aid and CPR/AED: Holger Stave's primary involvement as a Merit Badge couselor is based on his extensive experience in many aspects of First Aid. The most pertinent background comes from 36 years as a member of the National Ski Patrol, where he patrolled both down-hill and cross-country assignments. Mr. Stave became an Instructor and then an Instructor Trainer for the Outdoor Emergency Care curriculum used by the NSP for their First Aid training. Mr. Stave also taught for the American Red Cross, National Safety Council, and American Heart Association. In the past 3 years he added the Emergency Care and Safety Institute primarily for the Wilderness First Aid course as required by BSA for going high-adventure.
Mr Stave also drove ambulance for a while as an EMS system trained CFR. Mr Stave teaches Advanced First Aid, a 40 hour course, at Finger Lakes Community College.
Mr Stave is also a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, which prompted his association with his current BSA post as Mate with Ship 303. Mr Stave is authorized to teach the "About Boating Safely" course resulting in the coveted certificate for operating a PWC. Mr. Stave is also able to teach navigation and power boat handling, as he is a working Merchant Captain with a 50-ton license.
