Biography |
Class will be taught by co-counselors Dr. Linville and Mr. Wally Soplata.
A note from the counselors:
Hi, welcome to the exciting world of Aviation! As just one example of what I mean by "exciting," counselor Dr. Doug Linville will bring his World War II training plane, a T-6 "Texan" to the Tunica Airport for some fascinating show and tell. I've been doing this awhile, and it's a rare opportunity for scouts to get an up-close look at such a legendary airplane. You're truly in for a treat!
Requirements for the Aviation Merit Badge are a bit lengthy, but with some prior effort on your part as a scout, and the resources provided by your counselors, you will be able to complete your badge while gaining a powerful insight into the fascinating world of flying.
Prior to arriving for Merit Badge Midway, please print and fill out the "Aviation Merit Badge Workbook." To get the workbook, go back to the Merit Badge Midway homepage, and click the "Aviation" link located in the left-hand column. At the bottom of the Aviation Merit Badge web page, you'll see "Worksheets" listed, which can be downloaded in PDF or Word format as you desire.
Also, obtain and study an Aviation Merit Badge pamphlet. If you borrow one from your troop, and it's not the latest edition, beware that the badge requirements have changed in recent years. It's okay for you to use an older merit badge pamphlet, as the academic contents will still provide you the information you need to know. But to be sure you are looking at the correct requirements, use the downloaded worksheet mentioned above. The good news here is that the current requirements are actually less extensive than the old ones.
If you cannot get to a scouting store to get the aviation merit badge pamphlet, the Memphis Scout Shop will mail you one at a cost of $10.91 for black & white, or $14.50 for color. Postage is included in the price. Their phone number is (901) 323-6440.
Due to the size of the Merit Badge Midway group, we will be unable to offer airplane rides at this event. However, a signup list will be provided, and if enough scouts are interested in getting an airplane ride, I will work to setup a "Young Eagles" flying event in the Memphis area. We are fortunate in Memphis to have Chapter 182 of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) based at DeWitt Spain airport near downtown Memphis. The "Young Eagles" program is sponsored by the EAA and is currently chaired by actor/pilot Harrison Ford. This program provides free airplane rides to over 100,000 young Americans each year. To learn more about the Young Eagles program, check out the EAA website (www.eaa.org).
Best Wishes
Wally Soplata
