Cost is $125. This includes food for Monday through Thursday, including dinner for the families; one night camping at Pocahontas State Park; and charcoal and propane.

There are essentially four basic parts to the cooking merit badge: classroom, home cooking, backpack cooking, and car camping. All components will be covered in the class. There are no prerequisites.
1. HOME COOKING AND CLASSROOM
Monday through Wednesday
8:00 am to approximately 7:00 pm; dinner for the family will be served at 5:30

Scouts need to arrive beginning at 7:45 am. We will begin preparing breakfast immediately upon arrival. We will complete requirements 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 8. Parents need to arrive by 5:30 for dinner. Boys will be dismissed once everything is all clean. We will take field trips to Krogers and Penzeys Spices on Cary Street.
UNIFORM: Please wear Class B and bring Class A. Class A will be worn during field trips and dinner. Class B for rest of day.
2. BACKPACK COOKING
Thursday
8:00 am to approximately 5:00 pm
Uniform: Class B
Equipment: Backpack, backpacking stove (if you do not have one, please let me know), cookware (mess kit), utensils, water bottle, swimsuit, towel. Everything will be carried in a backpack, as if we were on an overnight hike. Optional items include camera, binoculars, fishing poles and bait. Sunscreen, hats, and bug repellant are recommended.
Hiking location and activities will be announced shortly.
3. CAR CAMPING (2 dinners, breakfast, lunch)
Friday and Saturday
8:00 am Friday to 3 pm Saturday
Pocahontas State Park, Chesterfield
One parent per troop needs to be able to camp; families are welcome
On this campout, we will work on requirement 6. We will meet at Pocahontas State Park between 8 and 9 am on Friday. We will start with setting up camp, and between meals explore Pocahontas and enjoy the pool.
Scouts will prepare their menus during class earlier in the week. They will be responsible for bringing all of the food they need to prepare their menus. All meals are to be made from scratch. NO MIXES OR STORE BOUGHT PREMADE FOOD. They will need to show proper storage for their food.
Uniform: Class B
Equipment: We will have grills, charcoal and cook stoves available. Scouts bring:
• Whatever cookware the Scout needs, such as dutch ovens, pots and pans, bowls, etc,
• mess kit for eating
• utensils (eating and cooking, including knives for chopping if needed)
• water bottle
• all food. Items needing refrigeration should be in a cooler. Scout is responsible for bringing a cooler and ice. The site may or may not have electricity, so plan for not having it (anything needing to be mixed, will need to be mixed by hand. An ice cream maker would be hand cranked).
• Anything else that they will need to complete their meals
• All camping gear
~ Tents, sleeping bag
~ personal items, sunscreen, bug spray, etc.
If you do not have certain items (tents, anything), please let me know. We can probably get it for you.
