This year's Akela District Merit badge College is hosted by the Troops of the Akela District.
Description

Merit Badge College is offered every year to provide a venue for scouts to come together and explore mutual fields of interest.


This year's event will be offered over two Saturdays and consist of four sessions.


Session 1:  April 10th AM


Session 2:  April 10th Afternoon


Session 3:  April 17th AM


Session 4:  April 17th Afternoon


*Multiple Session classes*  Some classes take more than one session to complete. All sessions needed are noted to the right of the Merit Badge and are required to be attended to complete the Merit Badge.


**Multiple Classes of the Same Merit Badge**  Multiple classes of the same Merit Badge may be offered and will be noted on a separate line.  Please do not sign up for more than one, thinking it is a multiple session class.


 


 


 

Counselor Information

Upon arrival at GTCC, please check-in at the Counselor Check-in table.  Classroom assignments will be available at this time.  For your convenience, refreshments will be available in a staff hospitality room during check-in and session breaks.  Session breaks and lunch schedules will be staggered. Please check your packet for appropriate times.  You are invited to join the scouts and staff for a pizza lunch.

Unit Sign-up Instructions

Registration is by Troop.  Please have one adult leader designated as your unit coordinator for registering your scouts.  Each scout may register for up to four classes.


Merit Badges offered are subject to change or cancelation, class minimums, and counselor availability.  Scouts are registered on a first come, first serve basis.  There are no waiting lists for any class offered.  If a class is booked, please check the website frequently for availablity. Additional classes and course selections may be added at anytime based on availability of counselors.


NO WALK-INS     Walk-ins will not be allowed to register.


All fees include lunch .  Enrollment opens February 18th and closes April 1st. Please remember to check often for changes and updates.


Advancement Program (BOS Advancement or Early Scout Skills)


Non-Merit Badge Sessions.  These are available for Boy Scouts needing many necessary skills needed for advancing to First Class rank.  The Scoutmaster still is responsible for deciding whether the Scout has learned enough during the class to be signed off.  A list of completed requirements will be provided to the Scoutmaster for evaluating the Scout prior to signing him off on the requirements. All requirements are now using the new Scout Handbook 2010 version.


Class Recommendations by Scout Rank


Scouts under 1st Class rank are recommended to take the Advancement Program and 1 or 2 Merit Badge Sessions.


Scouts 1st Class rank or higher may register for any Merit Badge.


Note: All Eagle required merit badges are only offered to Scouts 1st Class rank or higher.


Daily Schedule


Check schedule regularly as location and meeing places for classes will be added. Please be sure you check back 1-2 weeks before the event.


8:00 - 8:30 AM   Scoutmaster Check-in

8:40 - 8:50 AM   Opening Ceremony in Auditorium


8:50 - 9:00 AM   Leave Auditorium for Morning Session

Uniform


The full B.S.A Class A uniform is the Official Uniform of the day


Rules for Particiation



  • Scouts attending must be currently registered with the Boy Scouts of America.
  • Each unit must have at least 1 adult for every 10 Scouts attending. These adults are needed for crowd control and for ensuring quality results in the classrooms.
  • Scouts must have prior approval by their Scoutmaster before attending.
  • Scouts must behave in a Scout-like manner. Disruptive youths will be removed from class and put with their leader for the remainder of the day to handle.

Note: The adults are responsible for the Scouts who attend.


Be Prepared



  • Scouts are expected to arrive prepared with the appropriate merit badge booklet, pen/pencil, paper,and any other materials or assignments completed as stated in the prerequisites.
  • Any  requirements that instruct you to "Bring", "Collect", "Write", or "Discuss" should be brought with you neatly prepaired, proofread for accuracy, and includes your Name, Address, and Troop Number.  In this manner you can receive credit for your work.
  • Snacks will be available for sale at designated break times. It is up to the Scout to bring or buy their snacks at the event.

Dress appropriate as some of the classes are held outside. Class A uniform is Required.

Directions to the Event

The event on both April 10th and 14th will be at Guilford Technical Community College, Jamestown Campus. Registration and classes will be held in the Sears Applied Technology Building (Bldg 17).

Release Information
Scoutmasters are reponsible for ensuring that the appropriate permissions are obtained for scouts to attend the event.  The following classes require permission slips for transportation to offsite locations during the day: Golf and Truck Transportation.  Others may be required and will be updated as this information becomes available.  Please check the site often for updates.
