Description

The Mission Peak District Merit Badge Extravaganza is a day-long workshop series which provides each scout with the opportunity to work on and possibly complete requirements for a badge during its respective class time. Given the duration of the event itself, it is not guaranteed that all scouts will complete their merit badges.  However, they will be able to work toward completing some requirements for the badges.

Scouts may register for 2 merit badges and should also register for FOOD 1 (hot dog lunch) or FOOD 2 (veggie hot dog lunch).  Read Registration Instructions carefully.  Print information and prerequisites carefully below for their badges.  If possible, have one adult leader register for all scouts in the unit.

Event Policies

General

A Scout must BE PREPARED. It is the responsibility of the Scout to complete all requirements and/or prerequisites for any merit badge he chooses to work on. The counselor is there to provide assistance and additional information to the Scout concerning that merit badge.

Prerequisites & Requirements Completed Before the Event

Some merit badges have specific are or rank prerequisites.  For some merit badges, Scouts are provided requirements that they can complete on their own prior to attending the merit badge class.  If a scout has completed those requirements, then they may be able to complete the merit badge on the day of the event. If they do not, they may complete them at a later date and can make arrangements to meet at a later date with the merit badge counselor.

Scouts are expected to have read the merit badge booklet and bring the appropriate blue card signed by their scoutmaster to their class.  Some merit badge booklets may be available for purchase on site from the Scout Shop.

Attendance & Participation

Tardiness is not permitted. Scouts arriving more than 15 minutes late will not be allowed to enter the classroom. No refunds will be issued for Scouts who do not attend class due to tardiness.

Scouts are expected to participate in all class discussions. Scouts should ask questions, and be ready to answer questions when asked. Counselors reserve the right to call on any Scout to answer questions about the material, even if he does not volunteer.

Should the Scout not do the work to complete a requirement for the merit badge, it is their responsibility to complete it before it will be signed off on by the counselor. While much of the required material is presented during the workshops, that does not necessarily count as the Scout having completed it.

Blue cards

In order to receive credit for any merit badge, scouts must bring their blue card to all classes and must have completed all requirements. The blue card must be filled out completely by the Scout. Blue cards must be signed by the Scoutmaster of the Scout's troop before counselors will sign off on it.

Registration FAQs

Q: Where will Merit Badge Extravaganza classes be held?

A: Classes will held in the various classrooms or gymnasium of the Church of Latter-Day Saints, 3551 Decoto Road.  Scouts will receive the locations of their classes at the time of check-in. There will be volunteers assisting scouts to the correct classrooms.  One or two classes may meet outdoors.

Q: When are the merit badges being offered?

A: Classes are offered during 1 of 2 sessions. The sessions are: Session 1 (9am-12pm) and Session 2 (1pm–4pm).  Additional merit badge counselors will be added to meet with scouts who have partially met requirements and need to meet with a counselor to complete 1-2 requirements.

Q: What will attendees eat for lunch?

A:  A hot dog lunch will be provided.  When registering online, please also choose the time “LUNCH 12:00-12:45” and whether you want FOOD 1 (regular hot dog lunch) or FOOD 2 (vegetarian hot dog lunch).  Please designate whether you need a veggie hot dog. Unfortunately, this is the only meal accommodation made available.

Q: Do any classes leave the primary location?

A: No; however, the Geology class provides a field trip to the Children’s Natural History Museum in order to complete some of the requirements.  Some classes may be meeting outdoors, so dress accordingly.

Q: Where will parking be available?

A: You will be able to park in the church parking lot.  For those dropping off their scouts, please be careful of pedestrians walking in the parking lot.

Q: By what time should I be there?

A: Check-in and registration will begin promptly at 8:00 am. However, due to the substantial number of scouts, parents, and scout leaders that we are expecting to be at the event, it is NOT recommended to arrive long after the check-in time.

Q: Where will check-in be?

A: Check-in will be conducted at clearly indicated tables at the entrance from the parking lot in back of the church.

Q: What should my scout wear?

A: ALL scouts are expected to be attired in class A uniform. The primary reason for this is security, so that we know your scout is associated with Scouts BSA.
