If you are having trouble registering scouts, carefully read the information on the help tab.
If you send an email that does not include the information we need to help you, it wastes time and will get promptly deleted.
Test drive the new site (in progress) at New Meritbadge.Info.Leave comments at our Facebook page.

Notice!!! Meritbadge.Info will switch to the new site with BSA validation Friday morning March 13th.

If you wish to start using this site today, click here to launch meritbadge.info/mbn2

Adults must enter their BSA Number, DOB, First and Last name as it appears on their BSA ID card. We will query BSA and get back an answer. At this point one of three things can happen:
1) Your registration is verified - you can continue using Meritbadge.info normally
2) You are not registered or your registration has lapsed - your prior rights are revoked and you get the read-only screens that you see before your login
3) You are registered but your YPT has expired - your prior rights are revoked and you get the read-only screens that you see before your login

You have had at least two months to get yourself registered and complete YPT training. If you feel your validation is not working, send us an email with the four data items listed and we will validate your entry.

We have no control over what is on file at BSA. If everything matches your BSA ID card, there should be no issues. If not, your validation will fail.

Why are we doing this?
1. To provide higher security and validation of all adult users.
2. To clean up the mess we've accumulated via 15 years of poor user data entry.

How will we do this?

What should you do?
Login to https://my.scouting.org/ and copy your BSA ID Number then update your profile on Meritbadge.info.  Let others in your unit know they should do the same.  We are giving you 2.5 months advanced notice to make this work.

Welding

Valuable art and skill in today's job market

Look around your seat. How long does it take you to spot something metal? Perhaps the metal is the seat itself.

Welcome to a welder’s world.

“Everything you see where there is metal involves welding,” said Richard Mims, assistant professor of welding. “Whether it’s a bridge, your car, your patio set, the railings that you hold on to when you walk into your house – all those are processes that involve welding.”

That’s among the reasons welding is a fertile field for jobs, particularly in Hampton Roads. TCC students pursuing a career in welding have the option of completing several tracks of study. The most intensive is a 33-credit certificate in welding that includes classes in English and math in addition to the hands-on training the program offers.

Another alternative is the 26-credit career studies certificate focusing solely on the field with classes that range from Oxyfuel Welding and Cutting to Pipe and Tube Welding. Finally, TCC offers a 19-credit certificate that prepares students for entry-level position as maritime welders.

“Generally in this area, welders are always needed,” Mims said. Salaries can be as high as $44,000 a year, but on average an entry-level employee can expect to make between $14 and $16 per hour.

The TCC program is 10 percent theory, 90 percent application, Mims said. It’s helpful for incoming students to have a moderate level of manual dexterity and average mechanical aptitude, but a student with the right attitude – even one who can’t change the oil in the car – can still succeed.

The program works well for students directly from high school – currently dual enrollment is offered – or for those transitioning to a new career.

“It helps to be detail-oriented and have the ability to concentrate for long periods of time,” said assistant professor Walter “Lee” Duke, who spent 32 years as a welder at International Paper before the Franklin mill downsized in 2009.

That makes women ideal candidates, Duke said, and companies are often seeking female workers who excel in the nontraditional field. Ten percent of the students in the TCC program, which averages 400 students per semester, are female.

Once students graduate, they must pass certification, which is employer-specific. TCC students come in well-prepared for the exam, Mims said, and often employers, including Newport News Shipbuilding, sends employees back to the college for recertification.

While welding has evolved somewhat due to technology– computers have eliminated much of what used to be human error – basic skills are still essential.

“Compare it to driver’s ed,” Mims said. “Cars have changed; roads are wider; speed limits have changed, but you still have to learn how to drive. TCC provides the fundamental core.”

Mims – who earned his associate degree from TCC in 2005 -- worked as a welder at Newport News Shipyard for 13 years prior to coming to the college in 1996.

Duke is a graduate of Roanoke-Chowan College with a background in boilers, pressure vessels, piping, maintenance and repair. His credentials from the American Welding Society include Certified Welding Inspector and Certified Welding Educator.

Both men enjoy the field as much as ever.

“Welding is an art,” Mims said. “I feel like I’m Michelangelo. Some people think anybody can stick something together. To make it look good, to make it hold right, to fuse it requires coordination, detail and a rhythm.”

Teaching that art remains something both men are passionate about as well.

“It’s a portable skill with lots of opportunity,” Duke said. “It’s an opportunity to give our students something tangible. We get a wide spectrum of students, and they’re putting their trust in you. You make sure they can go anywhere and be comfortable knowing they can get the job done.”

Mims said the biggest reward to him is when he sees his students gainfully employed. “They come back and tell me they have a good job or sometimes they come back and have to be retrained and they end up with a promotion,” he said. “That’s worth more than the paycheck.”
